Basic Steps in Factoring Polynomials with Integers 1. Factor out all common factors. Note: Don’t drop the common factor. 2. To Factor a Binomial (2 terms) a 2 – b 2 = (a + b)(a – b) All others do NOT factor. Exceptions: Sum & Difference of two cubes will factor, but we will not consider these. 3. To Factor a Trinomial: ax 2 + bx + c Recognize perfect square trinomials. Use the ac-method. 4. To Factor a 4-Term Polynomial Use factoring by grouping. 5. Factor Completely NOTE: Not all polynomials are factorable.
