3
Compare an infectious disease to a non-infectious disease. Infectious Diseases 1. Are Caused by a pathogen. 2. Can be spread from one person to another. 3. Examples- Viruses, bacteria, and protists Non-Infectious Disease 1. Are caused by the environment or genetics. 2. They can not be transmitted to another person
4
What is a pathogen? Pathogens ProtistsBacteriaVirus A pathogen is an organism that causes a disease.
5
Protists Entamoeba histolytica Entamoeba histolytica Causes dysentery, a severe form of amebiasis associated with stomach pain, bloody stools, and fever. Causes dysentery, a severe form of amebiasis associated with stomach pain, bloody stools, and fever. Plasmodium, a one-celled parasite transmitted by a mosquito. Causes malaria, which causes flu-like symptoms and intestinal problems. Plasmodium attacking a red blood cell
6
Bacteria Streptococcus Bacterium Streptococcus Bacterium Causes strep throat, a painful sore throat and fever. Causes strep throat, a painful sore throat and fever. Mycobacterium tuberculosis Causes tuberculosis, a highly contagious respiratory disease.
7
Viruses Orthomyxoviridae – Influenza virus Orthomyxoviridae – Influenza virus Causes the flu, which is a respiratory infection that often causes the infected person to have a fever, headache, and body aches. Causes the flu, which is a respiratory infection that often causes the infected person to have a fever, headache, and body aches. Retroviridae - HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) Causes Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), which is a deadly disease that attacks the human immune system.
8
Where are pathogens found? 1. Infected persons. 2. Soil, Food and water. 3. Contaminated Objects 4. Infected Animals- Animals and insects that pass on a pathogen to a human is called a vector.
9
How can you prevent the spread of diseases caused by microbes? #1 - Wash your hands. Top 5 ways to help prevent the spread of disease: #2 - Keep surfaces clean and disinfected. #5 - Use antibiotics correctly. Antibiotics are chemicals that kill only bacteria. #3 - Use care when preparing and handling food. #4 - Get immunized by getting a vaccine. A vaccine is a chemical that is introduced to the body to stimulate the bodies own defenses.
10
3-2-1 Summarize!!! Write 3 facts you wrote in your notes in complete sentences. Write 2 facts given to you verbally that you did NOT write down in complete sentences. Write 1 question that presented itself to you while taking notes.
11
How can antibiotics be used incorrectly? Over time bacteria cells that cause disease become resistant to certain antibiotics. Over time bacteria cells that cause disease become resistant to certain antibiotics. Antibiotic resistance refers to bacteria that can survive in the presence of an antibiotic. Antibiotic resistance refers to bacteria that can survive in the presence of an antibiotic.
12
What can we do to prevent antibiotic resistance? Take all your prescribed antibiotics and do not skip doses. Take all your prescribed antibiotics and do not skip doses.
