9. Size and Population California population: 35 million United States: 313.9 million Japan population: 127 million Located on a series of islands. Slightly smaller in size than California. Only about 20% of the land is flat enough for farming and most of that land is used for cities. Most people live on the flat coastal plains.

10. The Land Made up of many islands with 4 main ones. –H–Hokkaido –S–Shikoku –H–Honshu –K–Kyushu Very mountainous so not much farmland. Lots of earthquakes and volcanoes.

11. Pair: Share What would you do? Problem: Only 20% of the land is open for farming. Problem: Animals use more land to raise than vegetables. Problem: Meat provides protein, a necessary nutrient. Look at the map on the next slide and tell your partner how you would handle these problems?
