4 ECHO, European Commission, Brussels 20 Jan 2016 KnowRISK project # aims at facilitating local communities’ access to expert knowledge on non- structural seismic protection solutions WHY? Damage of these elements often induces in significant earthquake impacts. #1999 Izmit earthquake, Turkey => 50% of the injuries and 3% of human losses were caused by non-structural failures. #2010-2011 Christchurch earthquakes, New Zealand => 40% of building damage was induced by non-structural malfunctions. Around 70%-85% of construction cost goes into these elements, their damage can strongly influence the ability of communities to cope with and recover from earthquakes. Non-structural elements of constructions are: - architectural parts (partitions, ceilings, cladding), - electrical and mechanic systems (distribution panels, piping, plumbing) and - contents (furniture, book cases, computers and desktop equipment).

5 ECHO, European Commission, Brussels 20 Jan 2016 Objectives i) Decrease the gap between science and stakeholders (Task B); ii) Identify non-structural elements in building stock (Task C); iii) Solutions to strengthen non-structural elements (Task C); iv) Assess the level of awareness of stakeholders and citizens (Task D); v) Promote the engagement among science community, practitioners and citizens (Task E); vi) Provide a multi-language Practical Guide of non-structural solutions (Task F).

10 ECHO, European Commission, Brussels 20 Jan 2016 Follow up of the project Dissemination of the Practical Guide Non-structural elements are many and of diverse nature. Only a few were given most attention. In the continuation of this Project other should be the object of more detailed analysis. In the field of communication of risk there are many other stakeholders beyond the ones worked out in this Project which could be interested in being part of the field inquires. A Special Issue publication will be made with all the material developed.
