Telethon is coming A large group from the entertainment and business sectors have begun work on a Global Telethon for Christchurch. The intention is for it to be a multi-channel broadcast, and a sign of national unity that brings focus to the widespread but disparate fundraising efforts that are taking place throughout the country. Focus the thousands of fundraising efforts to a single goal, total and day. Focus resources Align like entities Funnel money to a recognised, audited charity Highlight all those making an effort.
3
International Because of its international nature, Telethon for Christchurch is also designed to open up a major new source of funds for Christchurch – Kiwis living overseas – inspiring them to work together with Kiwis at home, towards a common goal. The broadcast would be live streamed globally, allowing us to access the hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders living overseas who are feeling frustrated in their inability to do something to assist the New Zealand effort. In this sense, it truly would be a Global Telethon. Working with KEA Utilizing a strong ex-pat social network Providing a channel for internationals to direct funds easily
4
Multi Channel Broadcast The date is tentatively set for Easter Sunday, April 24 th, which is appropriate both in terms of timing and the fact that it is a day on which the television networks are prohibited from generating commercial revenue. This would ensure there is no commercial loss for the networks in carrying the Global Telethon content. Minimize costs to networks Share load across networks Utilize all network talent Signal of national unity
5
Accountable Funds collected would be managed by a charitable trust (The Telethon for Christchurch Trust) established by Lowndes Jordan and audited by Ernst & Young. We are in the process of contacting and gaining the support of Board members that include: Sir Stephen Tindall, Brian Mogridge (PGC), Michael Steadman, Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker and Sir Peter Jackson. Money would be funneled directly to the PM's initiative, The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.
6
Support The group behind the initiative has the support of a wide array of industry members here in New Zealand and overseas, including regional television stations, Allied Press, TradeMe, Google, Livestream (US). We have also secured a working relationship with the World Class New Zealand network, which includes highly influential global Kiwis such as Mark D’Arcy (Head of Creative for Time Warner, NYC) and Craig Neville Manning (number six at Google, NYC). Support continues to grow and is snowballing daily Support at Government level Support from overseas officials A Facebook page set up on Thursday the 24th of February has already had over 300,000 post views, and has attracted literally thousands of offers of help, including from significant organisations such as Business New Zealand, KEA and the NZ Principals Federation.

CTV Staff from CTV have asked to be involved and would form a core part of the telecast team. Hi Brooke, Wasn't sure if any one from our crew had been in touch but I hope you don't mind my message, but I am from CTV and was wondering what you thought about getting the remainder of our crew involved with the telethon. I think it would be perfect and just what we would all need to get busy and take our minds of what we have been going through and as you may appreciate we all feel pretty hopeless at the moment. It would also be a nice way for us to pay tribute to our colleagues that have been lost and to there families. We have a very talented staff across the production area that I know would love to be apart of this. Please let me know what your thoughts are or direct me to who ever is putting this together. Cheers Reanna Smith

Talent We have a number of people on the ground in New Zealand, and abroad securing talent. So far A long list of New Zealand and International stars including Jamie Oliver, Coldplay, Rachel Hunter, Martin Henderson, Ellen Degeneres, Jim Carey and Jenny McCarthy have reached out with offers ranging from performing at our overseas events to coming to New Zealand for the telecast. Every day we receive more offers and expect this list to grow exponentially when the event is announced. So far word is spreading only by mouth. When this is announced we will be inundated with those wanting to help.

Cost Costs are being calculated, however, we expect this estimate to diminish significantly as every person who has offered help to date is doing so without remuneration. We believe the fundraising capacity of this Global Telethon will be in the tens of millions of dollars, bringing together as it does the compelling influence and fundraising capacity of all New Zealanders, both abroad and at home who are feeling frustrated that they cannot do more. More importantly this Global Telethon will help heal a nation.
