Plants – Prior Knowledge Students have probably learned about plants, but probably not as a renewable resource. It would be helpful if students viewed the FUN- damental Earth’s Resources before beginning this unit. In addition it would help students if they:Earth’s Resources –Understand what renewable means. –Have a good understanding of what it means to harvest plants. –Know that plants can be used for food, shelter, and even fuel.
4
Plants – Common Misconception The main use of plants is for decorating gardens and homes. –Reality: People and animals rely on plants for food, energy, shelter, fuel, and more.

Plants – Using DE Science Content When you close this presentation, you can review the following recommended resources for Plants. Exploration: Plants Reading Passage: Where’s the Bamboo? Video: Plants in our Daily Lives E Book: Planning for the Future Use the PowerPoint version of this presentation for hyperlinks to these resources or you can get to them through the browser or search feature.

Plants – Instructional Ideas Use the Exploration so students can begin to understand the many uses of plants as a renewable resource. –First, students select objects that were made from plants. –Then, these items are sorted into three categories of food, fuel, and shelter. –Students also learn more about how corn farms and pine forests help generate products we use everyday. As students watch the video Plants in our Daily Lives, they should complete an ABC graphic organizer to summarize all of the ways we use plants. –Students write the letters from A-Z on their paper, and try to find words or phrases that relate to how plants are used in our daily lives. Challenge students to find as many words as they can.
