3 Student Diversity Immigration has increased diversity in classrooms 1/3 Americans is of color Demographic forecasting -the study of people and their vital statistics Predicts that by 2030 ½ of the school population will be from non-European ethnic groups Trends in the data Race – a group of individuals sharing a common socially determined category often related to genetic attributes, physical appearance, and ancestry Racial categories vary by society Ethnicity –shared common cultural traits such as language, religion, and dress Culture – a set of learned beliefs, values, symbols, and behaviors, a way of life shared by members of a society There is a national culture (American) but there are micro- or subcultures (these can be related to class, religion, sexual orientation, etc.) The 2000 census added a new demographic, multiracial, and 7 million Americans responded yes (most were under 18) Multiracial – claiming ancestors from two or more races
