Why??? Why do you think scientists write everything down? Think first! Think first! Don’t raise your hand right away! Think. Now, turn to your shoulder buddy and share.

Scientists write everything down in their journals. They write down observations. They even write down what they are thinking or what they wonder about. This way, when we make a connection, we have the data to support it!

Model... W here have we seen the word “model” before? What do Scientists use models for? Can models be small? Large? Both? Well, lets find out!

Models Today we are going to make models using atoms. WHY?Because atoms are too small to be seen with the naked eye! WHY? Because atoms are too small to be seen with the naked eye! We are going to make models. We can see and work with a model. This will help us understand how atoms and molecules work.

ATOMS! Remember that atoms are

Atoms Lab! 1 gumdrop = 1 atom different colors = different types of atoms use a toothpick to connect the atoms

Molecules! Remember that molecules are at least two atoms that are connected together by very strong bonds!

Models! We are going to make some models with our gumdrops (atoms). Is it important to worry about the colors of the gumdrops? YES!

Draw a key in your journal KEY Red = carbon = C So, red gumdrop = carbon atom Purple = oxygen = O Green = nitrogen = N White = hydrogen = HWhite = hydrogen = H As soon as you’re finished writing, lay down your pencil so I know we are ready to continue.

H20H20 What do you get out of the faucet? Water! How do we know that water is a molecule? Hydrogen + hydrogen + oxygen = water Abbreviation, or formula = H2O Formulas are much easier to remember & write! We are going to make a model of a water molecule.

H20H20 In your journal, write the name of the molecule, the formula, and draw a picture of the molecule.

Make a Model of Pick up 2 atoms of hydrogen and connect them.Pick up 2 atoms of hydrogen and connect them. Ask: how many oxygen atoms will we need? Connect.Ask: how many oxygen atoms will we need? Connect. Hold up your water molecule for me.Hold up your water molecule for me. It’s okay for molecules to look different. It’s okay for molecules to look different.

In your journal, draw a water molecule. Label everything. When you’re ready, lay your pencil down.

Record EVERYTHING in your journal! What’s in the air? Oxygen. Oxygen molecule. Formula = O 2 Make a model of an oxygen molecule. Put everything in journal. Continue with Carbon dioxide CO 2 How many molecules total? Total Atoms? Kinds of atoms? Do the same for Nitrous oxide N 2 0

DID YOU KNOW THAT... We know what happens when atoms combine. Something really strange happens when we take one of the atoms off our molecule CO2. Carbon Dioxide becomes Carbon Monoxide! CO CO is a gas that can kill people! All we changed was one atom. Carbon Mono (means one) oxide is bad for us. While Co2 isn’t (at the right levels)

When Atoms Change !

If I add an atom, I change the molecule. If I take away an atom, I change the molecule.

Molecules can be HUGE (for molecules) Glucose is a type of sugar. It’s formula is; C 6 H 12 O 6 How many molecules? How many atoms?

Draw More molecules! H 8 C 9 H 8 O 4 8 H 9 N C 8 H 9 N O 2 13 H 18 C 13 H 18 O 2 14 H 14 C 14 H 14 O 3

Write Like a Scientist! In your journal, write down and then answer these two questions: In your journal, write down and then answer these two questions: How are atoms and molecules related to each other? How are atoms and molecules related to each other? What happens when we add or take away an atom from a molecule? What happens when we add or take away an atom from a molecule?
