Sex and Gender Definitions

Sex Sex: either the male or female division of a species, especially as differentiated with reference to the reproductive functions. Male, Female, Intersex Defines physical qualities

Gender Roles Gender Roles: set of societal norms that dictates behavior based off of actual or perceived Sex. Strict in traditional settings Gradually less strict in American Culture

Gender Expression Gender Expression: the public image of being a particular gender that a person presents to others. Masculine, Feminine, Androgynous Culturally Defined Masculine/Feminine Dichotomy

Gender Identity Gender Identity: One’s innermost concept of self. Man, Woman, Transgender Personal View What if we don’t agree? Am I masculine or feminine?

Male/Female Traditional Gender Roles

Male Traditional Roles No matter what culture you are from, male traditional roles are the same! Men have been viewed as a figure that represent masculinity! They are not cowards, and they possesses the warrior/aggressive trait.

Traits Resulting from Male Traditional Roles Men do not cry or show their emotions Men need to be masculine in the way they talk or act Men need to be assertive in their decisions Men do not show emotions or weaknesses in their work

Female Traditional Roles The list of women’s roles are long Many cultures expect many different roles for women Some of those can be double standards!

Traits Resulting from Female Traditional Roles Women need to wear make up and be pretty Too much makeup will make you a “bad woman” Women need to please their men all the time
