Interdependence: dynamic of being mutually responsible to and sharing a common set of principles with others. ie. Advances in technology, Global Village, the need for everyday items 2

Interconnectedness: To be involved with each other, often in very complex ways ie. water cycle, oxygen cycle, food chain 3

What is Globalization? The trend toward greater interconnectedness of the world’s systems. It can be described as a process by which the people of the world are unified into a single society and function together. 4

What does Globalization mean? To some it means: -A global village where everyone is linked by the latest advances in technology -The reason a local factory shuts down only to reopen thousands of kilometers away (why?) -Destruction of local cultures and weakening of traditional beliefs Why do views vary so greatly? 5

1.Globalization is an ongoing, evolving process. Its ultimate impacts are as of yet unclear. 2.There is NOT one form of globalization. Each will occur separately or in combination with another. 6

CULTURAL GLOBALIZATION Cultural Imperialism = Dominance of one culture over others Hollywood movies, MacDonald ’ s, Disneyland, Starbucks Dominance of the English language and invasion of other languages Do people all over the world have the same taste? “ Culture Industry ” = opportunities for Africans to sell their culture in the “ global market ” that values traditional culture

POLITICAL GLOBALIZATION The United Nations: Global assoc. of govts. facilitating cooperation in international law, security, economic development, and social equity Whose interests does the UN represent? The US and the UK were the only nations in support of going to war in Iraq Can a global politics with social values exist? POLITICAL GLOBALIZATION In 2001, US pharmaceutical corporations sued South African companies for infringing on AIDS medication patent laws In 2003, President George W. Bush announced the Emergency Plan in 2003 - the largest international health initiative in history by one nation to address a single disease HIV/AIDS Situation in 2004 HIV Infected: 5.3 million AIDS Deaths: 370,000 AIDS Orphans: 1.1 million

Mobutu civil war in Zaire) US is the #1 exporter of weapons globally US is the last on the list of exporters of non-military aid to the developing world
