Those are graduation requirements, but what does it take to go to a 4-year university straight out of high school?
8
What is the difference between a Junior College and a 4 year University? A technical school?
9
JUNIOR COLLEGE Junior College (AKA Community or City College) Over 144 in the state of California Local JC is Mt. San Jacinto (MSJC) Others that are around are RCC, Mira Costa, Palomar Benefits: Low cost – easy to transfer to a local university. Many Career and Technical classes offered. Certificates and AA and AS degrees offered.
10
UNIVERSITY Public, Private and Out of State In California there are two types of public universities. CSU = California State University and UC = University of California Example of CSU’s – San Marcos, San Bernardino, San Diego State
11
UNIVERSITY (continued) Examples of UC’s – Riverside, Los Angeles, Berkley, San Diego. What’s the difference? UC’s are more expensive, harder to get into, instruction is different and offer advanced degrees like Med, Law and Doctoral Degrees. CSU’s are less expensive, slightly easier to get into and instruction is more traditional.
12
UNIVERSITY (continued) Private Universities: Easy to difficult to get into and the most expensive schools to get into. Examples of private universities – USC, Stanford, Loyola Marymount, Azusa Pacific University, California Baptist (CBU).
13
UNIVERSITY (continued) Out of state Colleges/Universities There are both private and public There are JC’s and universities Advantage – may be easier to get into and cost may be equal or lower depending on scholarships Disadvantage – More expensive
14
UNIVERSITY (continued) Requirements: GPA Prerequisites (A-G) Tests (SAT/ACT and Placement) Application Process with deadlines
15
Technical Schools Many types – mechnical, business, computers, cooking, fire/police, medical Advantages - Students complete courses from 9 months to 2 years and only take courses directly related to career Disadvantage – Expensive, some schools are in business to make money and do not help with student placement in careers
16
Military Must have a high school diploma from a regular high school. No continuation or home schools Must take the ASVAB – Armed Services Vocational Academic Battery Scored from 1-99 A score of 50 is what most services are looking for, and it is not an easy test.
