Chemistry Learning goals for this unit: 1.Assess the social, environmental, and economic impact of chemicals 2.Investigate the physical and chemical properties of chemicals 3.Demonstrate an understanding of chemical properties and how the periodic table is organized.
2
What do you know about chemistry? In groups of 3 or 4, brainstorm what you already know about chemistry We will combine your ideas into one classroom brainstorm We will add onto this brainstorm every week

5
WHMIS Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
6
Purpose To keep workers safe in the workplace from dangerous chemicals
7
Duties of the People Involved SupplierEmployerWorker Classify Product Apply Supplier Label Provide Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) Conduct Workplace Inventory Ensure Proper Labeling is Used Maintain and Make Available MSDS’s Train Workers Participate in Training Apply Knowledge and Training KEEP YOURSELF SAFE!!
8
Supplier Label Name of chemical Risks and precautions Risk phrase WHMIS hazard symbol MSDS reference First aid instructions Supplier’s name and address
9
Does every chemical have a WHMIS label? Many products, including those used in the household do not have a WHMIS label Only chemicals that are hazardous will have a WHMIS label No
10
Compressed Gas A gas that is kept under high pressure The container may explode if: –The container is dropped –The container is punctured –The container is heated
11
Flammable and Combustible Materials Sparks, flame or friction could ignite the material Keep away from heat sources
12
Oxidizing Materials Causes or contributes to the combustion of another material by giving it oxygen Store away from flammable and combustible materials
13
Poisonous and Infectious Materials Division 1: Causing immediate and serious toxic effects –Can kill you quickly Division 2: Materials causing other toxic effects –Effects result from repeated exposure over time Division 3: Biohazardous infectious material –Bacteria and toxins that produce toxins and can cause disease
14
Corrosive Material Chemicals that can eat through various materials like aluminum or your skin! Can be liquid or gases
15
Dangerously Reactive Materials Materials that undergo dangerous reactions when subjected to heat, pressure, shock or contact with water
16
Activity Visit the different bottles and containers at the side bench Identify the WHMIS symbols and use them as examples in your handout
17
Carbon Dioxide
18
Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) 1. Product Info 2. Hazardous ingredients 3. Physical data 4. Fire and explosion data 5. Reactivity data 6. Toxicological properties 7. Preventative measures 8. First aid measures 9. Preparation information It is intended to provide workers and emergency personnel with procedures for handling or working with that substance in a safe manner
21
Activity Read through the MSDS sheet and find the answers to the questions!
22
Hazardous Household Products System Remember that not all products have WHMIS labels HHPS is designed for products at home Symbols are surrounded by three shapes that indicate their level of danger DANGER – symbol has a “stop sign” border WARNING – symbol has a diamond border CAUTION – symbol has a triangular border
23
Four different categories Flammable Poisonous Explosive Corrosive
24
Homework Go home and see what products are in your home that have HHPS labels and fill out your HHPS handout There are some examples at the front desk Please finish the MSDS scavenger hunt too!
