RISK FACTORS AND PROMOTING HEALTH

Target: I will be able to explain the difference between lifestyle factors and risk factors and define and give examples of combination vs. cumulative risk factors. Pg. 25 Lifestyle Factors: Personal behaviors and habits related to the way a person lives that help determine his or her level of health

Important Lifestyle Factors: Get between 8-10 hours of sleep per night Eat nutritious foods from the various food groups each day Refrain from smoking, using tobacco products, alcohol or other drugs Eat breakfast daily Get at least 30 minutes of nonstop vigorous activity most days of the week Maintain your recommended weight

Risk Factors and Teens 1. Personal Risk factors- Actions or behaviors that represent a potential health threat Things that contribute to unintentional and intentional injuries Tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use Unsafe sexual behaviors Poor eating habits Physical Inactivity

2. Cumulative Risks- risks that add up to a total that is greater than expected 1. Smoking2. Sunburns 3. Loud noises4. Lead exposure 3. Combination Risk factors Driving too fast and not wear your seat belt Drinking and driving

Protective Factors Positive role models- teachers, parents, family members, peers, doctors etc. You even can be a positive role model Positive values- such as perseverance and the courage to abstain from high risk behaviors Your Attitudes, Your Health It is more than knowing what to do You must believe that there is some benefit to practicing good health behaviors

Prevention: Practicing healthy habits to keep a person well and free from disease and illnesses. 1. Wearing seat belts2. applying sunscreen 3. Avoiding unsafe areas4. Wearing protective gear Taking Responsibility for Your Health 1.Increase your awareness of risk factors in your life 2. Increase your knowledge, learn all you can and get the facts 3. Evaluate at your current values and behaviors and make changes where you can Summary:
