1
Environmental Protection and Regulation of the Ecosystem By: Hannah Hurley
2
How this issue came about O Environmental protection has been dated back since the 1800s O Since the 1960’s, the environmental protection activity has increased sufficiently O During FDR’s presidency, he had a mission to restore the U.S. economy and prevent another Dust Bowl
3
“The biosphere refers to one global ecological system in which all living things are interdependent.” –Vladimir Vernadsky (1920s Russian Scientist) O Food Chain (Sun->Producers->Consumer->Decomposer) O Ecosystem (Global Warming, Smog) O Degradation (Fossil fuels, clean water, and food supply) O Scenery (Natural beauty)
4
What is happening to the Planet Some of the main topics you hear about today: O Global Warming Increase in near surface air and rising of ocean temperatures O Deforestation Wiping out forests for use of logging O Pollution or fossil fuels In the air and ocean. Releasing of harmful chemicals into the air and dumping into the ocean
5
Supporters O United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA or USEPA) educates people about human health and the environment. The EPA is under the federal government and enforces regulations from laws passed by Congress. Other well-known Organizations/Agencies O Sierra Club, World Wildlife Fund (WWF), National Wildlife Federation, along with many more.
6
Political Supporters O Liberal Democrats – made a plastic bag charge in U.K.’s supermarkets in Oct. 2015 and have introduced green laws O Green Party – wants a foundation for world peace so they establish principles that try to ban certain laws that involve animal abuse, environmental safety, and many more.
7
Who would non-supporters be? O Conservatives O People whom work within the job force For example: lumberjacks, “frackers”, etc Fracking
8
Many of the people whom have very little desire to contribute to the regulation and protection of the ecosystem believe that pooper nations are not financially able to help and is considered a waste of time.
9
Should the government get involved? The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) is affiliated with the U.S. federal government. The main reason people do not want the government involved is that poorer nations around the world do not have the money, nor desire to contribute to causes that aren’t as important when compared to other issues
10
Ways you can help O Recycle O Use less water O Donate to organizations O Volunteer
