Background Information [Insert Research about Dr. BrINClHOF elements Here] All of the stations seem to have to do with…..__________________________ [fill in information from your first day of observations about the stations] Purpose: To test the speed at which gases diffuse Prediction: Gases will move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration Gases have molecules that are spaced far apart and is is extremely easy for solids to pass through them
3
1. Obtain 2 clean Q-tips 2. Set up a glass diffusion tube in the horizontal position on a piece of cardboard. 3. Add 10-12 drops of the concentrated ammonium hydroxide solution to one of the Q-tips. 4. Add 10-12 drops of the concentrated hydrochloric acid to the 2 nd Q-tip. 5. At the same time, place the Q-tips on the ends and hold them until a solid forms. 6. Observe what happens in the middle of the tube.

Big Picture From the clues what was the big picture topic Dr. BrINClHOF was studying Use evidence from the clues to support your idea
6
Specific Data: (from your station that supports the big picture topic) The two different gas molecules have the same average kinetic energy but have different masses so they move differently through the tube. Gas #1: Concentrated Ammonium Hydroxide NH 4 (OH) = 35.06 grams/mole Gas #2: Concentrated Hydrochloric Acid HCl = 36.46 grams/mole
7
Point in tube where the two gases meet The reaction of the two gases forms a white solid but it is not exactly in the center of the tube. Which end will the white substance be closest to and why? The white solid from the reaction of the two gases will be closer to the heavier gas that does not travel as far: HCl. The masses of the lighter molecules in the ammonium hydroxide travel faster than the masses of the heavier molecules in the Hydrochloric Acid.
8
Specific Evidence Record specific evidence from what you observed at all the Stations on Day 1 about what Dr. BrINClHOF could have been studying Use examples for what the other stations were testing Use information from the Clues the police found hidden around the room and school
9
Importance Why is this big picture topic that Dr. BrINClHOF was researching important for him to be studying? What are the current topics associated with the issue he was studying? Use websites from Station #10 you may have to also do some of your own research to help answer this part
