Bio. 230 Evolution, Diversity and Ecology

General Course Overview  Classifying and Classification (ongoing throughout the course)  Some Terminology (very important and ongoing throughout the course)  Origin of Life  Some Major Evolutionary Concepts, Processes and Mechanisms  Survey of Domains and Kingdoms  Some Basic Ecology

Classifying ( I )  Classifying and classification are of the highest importance in science.  It is the result of almost everything we do.  It is a way of ORGANIZING information.  You classify all the time!  Why organize information?  1)To see relationships  2) To retrieve information

Classifying ( II )  All classifications are information storage and retrieval systems!  There are numerous classification schemes.  Some are better than others BUT there may never be one best one!  We may not always follow the one in the text (but we will be pretty similar).

Evolution  Central organizing focus in Biology  The why and how of things  Basic evolutionary processes apply to all taxa of organisms

Diversity of Organisms  Phylogenetic Survey  Start with the least advanced (? least evolved ?) and work our way up  Will look at structures and processes  Will look at importance (ecologic, economic, disease, etc.)

Ecology  Organisms and processes do not exist in a vacuum  They interact in numerous ways  Biotic and abiotic mesh to form complex unified systems (= ecosystems)  Ecology =\= Environmental Science

Lab This Week ( I )  Read assigned material in the lab manual  Bring it with you to lab  Bring your syllabus & handouts to lab  Bring your notebook to lab (we will be doing content on Classification and Classifying)

Lab This Week ( II )  READ: “Laboratory Safety & Protocol”  FILL OUT AND SIGN: “Laboratory and Safety Agreement”  READ: “Some important Guidelines For Doing Laboratory Reports”  DO: “Laboratory PRE-assignment, “FIRST WEEK OF LAB”

Lab This Week ( III )  HAND IN: Agreement and PRE- assignment when you FIRST come in to lab (they are due before the lab begins)  READ: Appendices I through V

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE? Information? Knowledge? Can have (1) without (2) Can’t have (2) without (1)
