Y3/4 Maths Morning ~ Fractions AIMS OF THIS MORNING… –Give an overview of expectations in Key Stage 2 (KS2) ~ fractions and decimals –Demonstrate how we teach the following in LKS2: Recognising fractions Fractions of numbers Fractions as a proportion of Decimals –Supporting your child at home –Resources we use in school –Resources to use at home –Any questions?

Expectations in LKS2 ~ fractions and decimals National Curriculum 2014 ~ higher expectations for all children, in all subjects. Maths is broken into the following: – Addition and subtraction – Multiplication and division – Fractions (Y4 also includes decimals) – Measures – Geometry: properties of shape (Y4 also incudes position and direction) ~ used to be known as shape – Statistics ~ used to be known as graphs I have included copies of the Y3/4 National curriculum requirements in your hand-out pack.

How we teach Maths at Treeton C of E Primary school Each class will have the following: Daily lesson of up to an hour, usually the first session in the morning, consisting of: Mental and oral ~ warm up Main session Plenary (to assess understanding and prepare children for the next steps in their learning) Maths is usually tested at the end of a unit, however this will change as new resources are being developed, in light of the change in the National Curriculum, and are likely to be tested on a half-term or termly basis (please ask me, or your child’s class teacher if you would like to know more ~ or write it on the feedback sheet, and I will get back to you)

What is a fraction? A fraction is a part of a whole. There are two numbers to every fraction: Numerator 2 (How many parts we are talking about or using or needing) Denominator 7 (How many parts there are in total or altogether)

Can we also use different representations of lines, groups of objects……? e.g. What fraction of the M&Ms are red? What fraction of the tins of food are vegetables? What fraction of the letters are vowels? How to say fractions: 1111 2345 One half one third one quarter one fifth

Game time!! ~ the link for these printable sheets is on the website

Finding the fraction of a quantity (number/amount) To find a fraction of an amount: 1of 20 1 of 50 510 20 ÷ 5= 450 ÷10 =5

Then we move onto…

How can the fraction wall be used? You have copies of these in your pack to take home (including decimals (Y4 onwards) and percentages (Y5 upwards).

Other resources… Resources we use in school Resources online (web links on the school website too) Resources in your pack ~ information goes up to Y6 level Any questions ~ related to fractions or not? Or write them on your feedback sheet, I will get back to you! Please complete the feedback form ~ thank you!

Recognising decimal fractions Y3 Recognise that tenths arise from dividing an object into 10 equal parts and in dividing one-digit numbers or quantities by 10. Y4 Recognise that hundredths arise when dividing an object by one hundred and dividing tenths by ten. Y5 Recognise and use thousandths and relate them to tenths, hundredths and decimal equivalents
