1 21st CENTURY SKILLS COURSE By Tim Kubik, Ph.D. with Ken Kay, Valerie Greenhill, and Maria Langworthy Unit 1: Understanding 21st Century Learning

2 The 5Cs Critical Thinking Incorporate critical thinking into classroom teaching plans and interdisciplinary learning activities to help students develop 21st century skills. Communication Clearly communicate expectations to students and model ways that they can communicate evidence of their 21st century learning. Collaboration Students, teachers, and parents form interdependent teams that encourage students to share responsibility for learning and integrate 21st century skills into the curriculum. Creativity Develop and implement learning activities and assessments that connect the curriculum to real-world problems and innovative solutions. Cross-Cultural Competence Engage students in learning activities that connect the curriculum to students’ local and global communities. 5 Authentic Learning Authentic Learning activities match the real-world tasks of professionals in practice as nearly as possible. Learning rises to the level of authenticity when it asks students to work actively with abstract concepts, facts, and formulae inside a realistic—and highly social—context mimicking “the ordinary practices of the [disciplinary] culture.” Source: Marilyn M. Lombardi, “Authentic Learning for the 21st Century: An Overview,” Educause Learning Initiative, May 2007

6 Project-Based Learning 5 In Project-Based Learning, students go through an extended process of inquiry in response to a complex question, problem, or challenge. Rigorous projects help students learn key academic content and practice 21st century skills. Source: www.BIE.org

7 Direct Instruction  Guided Practice Direct Instruction is an approach to teaching. It is skills-oriented and the teaching practices it implies are teacher-directed… [C]ognitive skills are broken down into small units, sequenced deliberately, and taught explicitly… These teaching functions include teaching in small steps with student practice after each step, guiding students during initial practice, and ensuring that all students experienced a high level of successful practice.
