Portfolio A portfolio is a purposeful, integrated collection of actual exhibits and work samples showing effort, progress, or achievement in one or more areas. It presents a broad, genuine picture of student learning.

Characteristics of Portfolios Use of flexible and multidimensional forms of assessments Documents student progress, improvement, and achievement of goals Promotes student choice, self-evaluation, and reflection of the learning process Provides feedback and continuous evaluation of student progress toward goals Provides increased motivation to students and teachers Spotlights student achievement and the promotion of the physical education program

Types of Portfolios Working portfolios Showcase portfolios Thematic portfolios Multiyear portfolios Group portfolios Electronic portfolios

Suggested Portfolio Tasks See figure 6.5 in the textbook for many suggested assessment tasks that could be chosen for inclusion in a portfolio.

Portfolio Guidelines in Performance-Based Assessment 1.Identify the learner outcomes that are to be demonstrated through the portfolio assessment. 2.Develop and communicate portfolio guidelines to students (for examples, see figure 6.1 in text). 3.Build flexibility into the class schedule. 4.Provide a variety of performance-based learning and assessment opportunities for students. 5.Guide students as they generate portfolio ideas. 6.Provide opportunities for students to share or showcase their portfolios.

Evaluating Portfolios Create and use a scoring rubric to evaluate portfolios. Rubrics should be given to students when they are given the assignment. Rubrics should include 3 or 4 levels of performance. Include specific description of criteria for each level of performance. See figure 6.6 and table 6.1 in text for examples.

Conclusion The portfolio assessment process holds much promise for those teachers who are willing to challenge themselves and their students.
