1 Overview of Policies and Procedures University of Missouri-Kansas City

2  September –mandatory candidates notified, call for promotion to full professor; List of external evaluators compiled  October through January- Info Sessions & Electronic Portfolio sessions with Beci  February 1 – External Evaluator Lists due to Dean  May 1– candidates submit portfolio to Dean’s Office via P&T Coordinator  Summer – External Evaluators Review Portfolio  The Next Fall-Unit Reviews including Department/Unit P&T Committees, Chair, and Dean  January thru April – Campus Review including Campus P&T Advisory Committee, Provost, and Chancellor  May – Final Decision by Chancellor

3 Department/School P&T Committee review follows procedures developed by its faculty and writes letter of recommendation to Chair. Chair/Supervisor prepares Part II of the portfolio and writes letter of recommendation to next level. School Committee reviews (only if both Dept. & School committees exist) and writes letter of recommendation to Dean. Dean reviews portfolio and writes letter of recommendation to Provost. Candidate will receive, and may rebut, all recommendation letters as they are issued; if no rebuttal, Candidate should advise P&T Coordinator to move forward as quickly as possible; otherwise, rebuttals must be delivered by deadline indicated.

4 Dean forwards portfolio to Provost. Campus P&T committee is advisory to the Provost and Chancellor Provost makes recommendations to the Chancellor based on CPTAC votes and her own review of each portfolio Chancellor makes final decisions and informs candidates in early May. Successful candidates will receive promotion and/or tenure at the beginning of the next academic year (September 1).

6  For assistant professors early promotion and tenure requires exceptional justification.  In all cases, evidence of early productivity at UMKC must be exceptionally strong. 7 The electronic portfolio contains 5 folders to be completed by the Candidate:  Candidate Information Folder  Contains Part I Form, CV, Leave, Extension, and other documents pertinent to the information supplied in Part 1 Form Sections A & B, Dept., Unit, Campus, & UM System Criteria and Guidelines for P&T  Teaching Folder  Contains evidence of Teaching to support Part 1 Form Section C (last 5 years of teaching activity)  Scholarship/Research/Creative Activity Folder  Contains evidence of Scholarship to support Part 1 form Section D  Service Folder  Contains evidence of Service to support Part 1 form Section E  Additional Materials Folder  Contains evidence to support claims made in Part 1 Form Section F

9  Statement of Teaching Philosophy and practices including teaching motivation, goals, future agenda, and impact  Check with Department for best way to present teaching evidence  Teaching scholarship  Teaching evaluations (summary sheets only, no raw data  Volunteer Teaching activities & Service Learning Initiatives  Unsolicited Letters and other information

10  Explain how teaching is evaluated  Identify context for teaching scores  Include Student Evaluation Summary Sheets (no raw data!!!) with samples of student comments  Syllabi and supplementary documentation

16  Avoid excessive documentation of service  Provide simple list  Include unsolicited letters documenting committee appointment and/or commendations of “exceptional service”
