Neapolitan 6 th Chord Major triad built on the lowered 2 nd scale degree Meaning of name unknown Some believe it is a reference to “Neapolitan” school of 18 th century Italian opera composers (ex. Scarlatti, Pergolesi) Usually in 1 st inversion N ⁶ or i II ⁶ Found more often in minor than major keys Usually continues in circle progression to V

Doublings and Voice-Leading Double the 3 rd of the chord whenever possible Composers tend to include the melodic d3 in soprano Avoid chromatic voice leading in any voice when leaving N ⁶ When followed by I ⁶₄ watch out for parallel 5ths
