Recap questions chapter 8a Where are spermatozoa produced? What is produced by the interstitial cells? Name two male gonadotrophic hormones What is the function of the prostate gland? What is produced by the seminal vesicles and why?

HIGHER HUMAN BIOLOGY UNIT 2 CHAPTER 15 Sex Organs and Hormonal Control Female

Sex organs and hormonal control Learning Intentions: What is the structure and function of the female reproductive system? What are the functions of the hormones involved? Success criteria Functions of hormones FSH, LH oestrogen and progesterone Effect of hormones on menstrual cycle

What is the structure and function of the female reproductive organs? Ova (eggs) produced in ovaries by meiosis of egg mother cells Each egg is contained in a developing Graafian follicle Graafian follicles produce sex hormone oestrogen After ovulation the Graafian follicle becomes a corpus luteum which secretes progesterone

What are the functions of the hormones involved? Female gonadotrophic hormones also produced by anterior pituitary -Follicles stimulating hormone (FSH) -Luteinising hormone (LH) Target tissue – ovary Both begin to be produced during puberty

What is the function of FSH? What is function of LH? Stimulates development and maturation of Graafian follicle Stimulates production of oestrogen Triggers ovulation Brings about development of corpus luteum Stimulates production of progesterone Female reproductive hormones

What is function of oestrogen? What is the function of progesterone? Stimulates cell proliferation (cell division) of endometrium (uterus lining) Stimulates secretion of LH Promotes thickening of endometrium Inhibits secretion of FSH Female reproductive hormones

Graafian follicle where egg matures Graafian follicle also produces oestrogen which stimulates proliferation of endometrium in preparation to receive fertilised egg Oestrogen also stimulates production of LH which triggers ovulation and development of Corpus Luteum Corpus luteum promtes production of progesterone which stimulates thickening of endometrium Progesterone inhibits production of FSH thus inhibiting Graafian follicle stimulation and egg maturation

What do I know? What is the function of FSH? What is the function of LH What is the function of oestrogen? What is the function of progesterone?
