1 DEFORESTATION BY LIZ-MARIE GARRAWAY FORM 1M BY LIZ-MARIE GARRAWAY FORM 1M

2 Deforestation is the permanent destruction of indigenous forests and woodlands. Deforestation is a problem that is caused largely by greed and want for property, money and possibly status. In many parts of the world the forest is taken for granted as a re-plenishable resource, which it is. The problem is that the trees cannot be re-grown and replanted at the rate at which they are being cut down. For this reason the forests are declining at an incredible rate and there is no foreseeable future for places like the Amazon which remained untouched for 20 000 years and now could be destroyed in less than a human's life time.

7 PRESENT CONDITIONS OF DEFORESTATION IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO PRESENT CONDITIONS OF DEFORESTATION IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO Trinidad and Tobago lost an average of 700 hectors of forest per year. The amount to an average annual deforestation rate of 0.30%. Biodiversity and Protected Areas. Trinidad and Tobago has some 678 known species of amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles according to World Conservation Monitoring Centre 22% are endemic. Meaning they exist in no other country and 2.5 of species of vascular plants or which 10.4% are endemic. Trinidad and Tobago lost an average of 700 hectors of forest per year. 8 CAUSES OF TROPICAL DEFORESTATION FOR THE PERIOD 2005-2009

9 CONCLUSION The cutting or burning down of forests has a tremendous amount of cascading effects that aggravate the effects of global warming. Human beings always have been and probably always will be to some extent dependent on forests. Trees were their habitat, their environment, their source of food and their protection from enemies. Forests are very important to man, and other organisms, and one of the biggest problems the world is facing today is the threat of totally losing the forests due to massive deforestation and suffering the harmful effects of deforestation. There is urgent need globally for the protection of the forest. The cutting or burning down of forests has a tremendous amount of cascading effects that aggravate the effects of global warming.
