PLANNING  If you are serving multiple age groups, plan different, age-appropriate activities for each age group.  Invite youth to assist in the planning process.(Talk to or survey your kids and families before planning)  Think of your program “hour-by-hour” to ensure that you have adequate activities to fill the day.  Include a variety of activities and give children choices whenever possible.  Always have back-up plans for weather related delays, cancellations, etc.  Include FUN educational enrichment activities. Make sure your program doesn’t feel like school.  Develop fair procedures to ensure that everyone gets a chance to do the most popular activities.  Do not expect children to remain engaged in the same activity for too long without a break. For younger children, ½ hour to 45 minutes seems ideal.  Provide plenty of opportunities for physical activities.
