Rape Facts Rape is an act of violence with domination a key factor. Rape often occurs between acquaintances or dates as well. Women no more want to be raped than a person who carries money wants to be robbed. Known victims have ranged in age from 6 months to 90 years. Since so few rapists are convicted they tend to repeat their actions. Most rapists are between 16 and 24 years old. Rapes are often planned but the victim is left to chance. Sex Offenders: Quick Facts 86% of reported cases know their victim 97% male 23% of offenders were under 18. 4% were under 12. Child molesters do not “attack” quickly. They may spend many years integrating themselves into a community and “grooming” relationships

Grooming To reduce the likelihood of a disclosure. To reduce the likelihood of the child being believed. To reduce the likelihood of being detected. To manipulate the perceptions of other adults around the child. To manipulate the child into becoming a cooperating participant which reduces the likelihood of a disclosure and increases the likelihood that the child will repeatedly return to the offender.
