WHY DID THE WATERTIGHT GATES FAIL WHEN THE TITANIC HIT THE ICEBERG? By: Anonymous
2
There are 17 gates and if four of them were filled with water it could withstand it but when it hit five it could no longer hold up. This is a diagram of how the ship’s watertight gates work. So when the Titanic hit the iceberg it gashed a hole through five gates and filed all of them up. Later that morning it had sunk because the ship did not withstand that much weight and pressure it put on the bow of the ship, so it had broken in half. Watertight Compartments
3
Why The Watertight compartments Were Used Watertight compartments help the boat float when it hits something. Ex. The Titanic had 16 and when it breaks through 5 it will sink. The Olympia was built right next to and was an exact copy of the Titanic. Later they took it out of the water and scrapped the Olympia.
