2 In pairs, make a list of… …all the ways people can access information on current events.

3 Homework ten Make a list of ten newspapers. Arrange these under the headings ‘Broadsheet’ and ‘Tabloid.’

4 The printed media: newspapers What is a newspaper? A regular publication that features news stories on current events. What are they for? To provide information to the public on political, social, cultural, and economic issues. Who do they appeal to?

5 The printed media: newspapers A ‘regular publication’: Some papers are published every day and are sold all over the country or in particular counties – examples? Some newspapers are published just once a week. Can you think of any?

6 Broadsheets & Tabloids Two major sizes of newspapers. Broadsheets A2. Tabloids A3. content However, it’s no longer possible to tell broadsheets and tabloids apart by size only – content is very important!

7 Broadsheets Articles deal with serious issues. Usually discuss politics and government. Use serious/formal style of writing. Articles are well researched. Photographs are important. Several stories mentioned on the front page.

8 Tabloids Tabloids sensationalise/exaggerate. Emotive language creates sense of bias. Easier to read – simple language & slang. Gossip and hearsay. Main information is contained in first few sentences. Font/print size generally large. Use large photos.
