EDUCARE
2
The learner’s needs EDUCARE explanation Doing detail Using the skill Check and correct Aide-memoire Review & revision evaluation
3
Explanation Relevant background information What is obvious to the teacher is rarely obvious to the student Without explanation other higher skills cannot be built Some teachers only give an explanation and nothing else Can be gained by teacher talk, reading, discovery
4
Doing detail The need to know in concrete terms –What they are expected to do –How they can best do it –How they can tell if it has been used correctly –When it is appropriate to use the skill
5
Using the skill Practice is essential It is not a luxury But it is a time consuming activity
6
Check and correct Ideally every students work should be checked a number of times in a lesson Teacher checking should eventually lead to student checking –Do the students have the skills to check? –Can they check higher order skills? Feedback prevents errors from re-occurring
7
Aide-memoire It is impossible to remember everything first off. What can the students take away with them What own summaries have been made How have the students internalised the information
8
Review and revision Teach in September and review in June? Learning needs constant reinforcing
9
Evaluation Assess, test, examine Can ‘the skill’ stand alone How do you know what has been learnt Don’t confuse structured practice with assessment/evaluation
