Grew up in the midst of Indian warfare No schools in Kentucky frontier Zachary studied for a while under tutors In 1808 was appointed a first lieutenant in U.S army In 1810 was promoted to captain In 1810 met Margaret Mackall Smith Married on June 21,1810 Had I son and 5 girls 2 died as infants

Troops nicknamed him “old rough and ready” Hero during and after the war 12 th president of the U.S (1849 – 1850) Made greatest contribution to country as soldier Served country for 40 years as soldier and for 16 months as president

Courage and ability during Mexican war made him a national hero Never lost a battle Showed courage while president and in the war This quite, friendly man was not a military genius but was a good leader Died 16 months in to being president Died July 9, 1850, Washington DC
