Accelerated Reader No child will receive an “A” in Reading or Math if they have not achieved the following goals Accelerated Reader: 1st Trimester – 30 pts. 2nd Trimester –35 pts. 3rd Trimester –35 pts. If a student wants to read a novel, and there is a movie made from the novel, parents must write a note before the student begins to read, stating that they will monitor reading. This reading will be done at home, so the parents can verify. 20% of grade

2nd Trimester – 40 pts. 3rd Trimester – 40 pts. TOPS Reports must be corrected All mistakes are to be corrected before turning in for credit. 20% of grade

Agendas ALL homework is written into the agenda daily
Review with your child daily Look for notes from me at the bottom of the agenda All Classwork is Homework if unfinished and all Homework is Classwork if they have extra time Late work - Don’t run their work back unless it’s a big project and you hear from me -part of their learning experience Absent work is due a day later - they are responsible to get it when they return - they find it in weekly file; look on my internet site for that day’s homework - Posted usually by 2:45

Missing or Late Work Homework is corrected in class on the next day, so in general, late work is not accepted. Long Term Projects/Reports - still need to be turned in and will get a grade. I will deduct 10% for each day. Extra Credit is just that – I do not give “Extra” work unless all assigned work has been completed.

Friday Folders Every Friday, students will bring home a folder with important notes, returned assignments, and tests. Please check this. Review scores and work with them They need to return the folder on Monday, signed. Reading logs are also due on Monday, so you can sign them together, One of the more valuable things you can do as a parent is to praise outstanding work and help him/her learn from mistakes.

Tests & Quizzes Literature, comprehension, and grammar are usually on Friday Spelling- Tests are on Thursday (list given on Friday) Greek & Latin - Thursday Math- tests at the end of a unit Science/ Social Studies- tests at the end of the chapter. Study Guides- please sign and return the day of the test.

State Testing Spring In addition to the Standards Based test in Language Arts and Math, 5th grade takes a Physical Education and Science test. Students must participate in running the 1 mile, push-ups, curl-ups, and flexibility. District website has a list of all Common Core Standards

Behavior Classroom Behavior- Emphasis on respect and responsibility - Our classroom is a family! Positive Rewards: Praise, Tickets, Popcorn Parties, & Basketball Shots (Team Points) Problems: JUPITER GRADES, time outs, phone calls home, text messages, Academic - I am looking for your child’s best work.

Study Skills & Habits Make sure they have a quiet place for homework
Health Habits - Good breakfast, Deodorant, Daily Showers Come on time, Don’t leave early (unless necessary) , Good Attendance - THEY are responsible for locating missed work, Tardy is marked once the class door has been closed.

Special Occasions Birthday Treats- let me know at least the day before (Note, , or talk to me) Provide nutritious alternatives (ie. fruit, carrots) NO HOMEMADE Treats allowed. Only store-bought packaged, sealed treats, and they must be served in the afternoon.

Grading Students will receive a letter grade on their report card (A, B, C, D, F) Breakdown of grade: Reading 60% Tests & Quizzes, 20% Classwork & Homework, 20% Accelerated Reader Writing 30% Tests & Quizzes, 50% Essays, 20% Classwork & Homework Language Mechanics & Spelling 20% Homework/Classwork, 50% Tests & Quizzes, 30% Essays (Content grammar and spelling)

Grading Continued Grading periods end October 30, February 11, and May 15. Conferences will be held September (for everyone) Sign-up sheet is in the back December (on an as-needed basis) If you ever feel you need to conference about your child’s progress - I am always available!

Field Trips Fifth Grade Outdoor Science Camp- February 16-19, 2016 in Crestline. Attend meeting this evening. Children are supervised every minute of the day and night. I always attend! It is a great experience.

Book Orders I will send book orders home monthly. This is a great opportunity to build your home libraries. Please make all checks out to “Scholastic Books” or order on-line. If more than one book order is sent home, you may combine totals and send one check. Sometimes books are only $ .99, so don’t miss out on great deals. This is a great way to encourage your student to read. It is always optional - You do not have to purchase books.

Ranking second is reading at home Education is a team effort. I will put my heart and soul into everything I do, but it takes the parent working with the teacher to make a student successful. Ranking top for student success is parental involvement and cooperation.
