2 The thriller genre in general employs a range of techniques and moods to give its viewers the unique and distinctive experience they expect and came for. Some of these conventions include the emotion they create in the audience like; Tension, shock, confusion, excitement. Theses all produce a strive that draws them into and drives the narrative that’s constantly peaking and dulling “keeping them on edge of their seats.” Most thriller films usually have a psychological spin to them that gives them an eerie, unfamiliar feeling that appeals because its give an escape from reality and allows them to really feel involved which is usually produced when the main character get into a dangerous situation or when solving a mystery. An Overview

3 Thriller: An overview “Thriller” is the name given to the genre of movie that’s main focus is to provide the audience with a thrill. If the thriller is strictly following the conventional rules of a thriller then it will usually pursue one goal, to thrill the audience and give them a sense of escape from the norm. whilst being drawn into the narrative the constant rollercoaster of exhilaration and tension the audience would be on the edge of their seats. The convention narrative always contain an antagonist and protagonist. The protagonist would usually have to overcome some sort of problem, usually a kidnapping or some form of heist gone wrong. The Antagonist is the villain in the story who's main goal is too oppose the antagonist for various reasons.

4 The lodger (1926) - this is one of the first real thriller films. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock a real pioneer in the thriller genre, it was about a landlady who is suspicious of her lodger being a serial killer. Strangers on a train (1950) - 24 years later Hitchcock started adding Technicolor to his thrillers, this gave them a unique feel emphasizing certain parts of the movie with colour. Frenzy (1972) – during a violent wave of thriller films, Hitchcock came out with his first British thriller in almost two decades. Se7en (1995) – American noe-noir thriller with elements of crime and horror. It was nominated for the academy awards British and American but didn’t win, however is one MTV movie award for best movie. A brief history of thrillers Some of the earliest thrillers were by Harold Lloyd, these included “Safety Last” a comic about a daredevil stunt on the side of a skyscraper and “M” a chilling and haunting German film. Another person who helped shape the modern day thriller with his multiple films like “The Lodger” and “Blackmail” was Hitchcock. labelled “the master of suspense and thrillers”

5 Thriller hybrids and subgenres Not all thriller films are conventional thrill only type. There are many hybrids of the thriller genre, mainly employing horror and their secondary theme. Some examples of hybrids: The cabin in the woods (2012) (horror) – a group of five college kids are tricked into spending the weekend at a mysterious cabin in the woods. Adult hood (2008) (drama) – sequel to award winning kidult hood. Follow story of the main character who after getting out of prison for murder has to come to grips that life no easier on the outside. The Equalizer (2014) (crime) – a gone clean man is suddenly brought into a world of hell after he meets a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters. And its his task to save her.
