Samuel de Champlain French Explorer who began to explore North America, following the journals of Cartier. Champlain established the first permanent French settlements in North America, and called the land “New France.” French Explorers came to spread Catholicism, Create Alliances with Native Tribes (Huron & Algonquin), and to build the fur trade.

1. Navigates the entire Mississippi River. 2. Explores the Gulf of Mexico 3. Explores the Great Lakes Region 4. Establishes the Colony of Louisiana in 1699, named after King Louis XIV.

Keeping Spain in Check 1. With the establishment of the Spanish Mission System, Spain lays claim to all of North America. 2. France begins creating their colonies along the perimeter of North America 3. The French had also established colonies in the Caribbean and West Indies in which they imported slaves from Africa to work the rice plantations.
