3 A tourist company wants to develop this area. What impacts would there be?

4 Ecotourism in Ecuador (5 min) Why is Ecuador worth protecting? What is the threat to the rainforest? How does ecotourism help?

5 You have been hired by the Brazilian government to develop an ecotourism project in the Amazon rainforest You need to develop a plan for your project You have a set budget of 10,000 Reals You must develop a SUSTAINABLE resort that will have minimal impact on the rainforest and local tribes. It needs to show to the world that Brazil is supporting ecotourism.

6 On your plan, make sure you include reasons WHY you are building your resort.

7 A generator costs 500 Reals. A water purifiers costs 200 Reals. Gas heating costs 200 Reals per lodge. Solar panels cost 200 Reals each. Sustainble wood burners cost 100 Reals. A new minibus costs 1000 Reals. Paying the local bus company costs 500 Reals. Activities. Conservation tours cost 20 Reals per visitor. A balloon ride costs 100 Reals. A rainforest trek costs 500 Reals. Accomodation. A modern lodge using bricks costs 1000 and can sleep 20 people. A sustainable lodge made from trees costs 500 and can sleep 15 people Staff. Employing overseas workers costs more than using local natives who know the area well.

10 Tourism in the Rainforest Use your knowledge and what we have seen to answer the following question: Is tourism a good thing for tropical rainforests? You need to consider both sides of the argument and include your own opinions.

Level 5 You describe the tourist attractions of the rainforest and explain some benefits and drawbacks tourism may bring. You include your own opinions. You relate this to the development of countries that may have rainforest.
