How much do you think it costs to have a baby? Use the sheet provided to brainstorm the different items you would have to buy for a baby.

The following things are items you may need to buy for your baby. We have compared prices from retail stores in order to find the cheapest prices. We have taken the average of the expensive and the least expensive prices with some of the items. All these prices are local to Fredericton.

The total for one year… $ 14,613 dollars

Let’s consider… A teenager who works full time at minimum wage. At 40 hours a week you would make $412.00 a week without taxes taken off. The yearly income would be $21,424. (This does not include deductions like income tax, EI & CPP) With deductions, your income would be $18, 232

The cost of a baby for one year… $14,613 Your yearly income… $18, 232 Money left over… $3619 (or $301 per month)

However…do you want to go back to school? Of course, you would be making less money, and you would have to be paying for school. Baby’s are cute, but they certainly complicate things. Would you have enough money to support your baby? For one year? And…remember there will be at least 18 more years after that…
