5  How do you set goals for Clients professionally?  How do you set goals for yourself?  Start where the client is?

6  In order to understand what goals we want to set for ourselves, we have to understand which behaviors need attention.  What are Internalized Behaviors? - things people do on the inside or to self and these are not so overt or readily observable. These often include self-talk, obsessed thinking and self- directed actions which are much less clear to you or others

7  What are External Behaviors? - we talk, run, sit quietly, yell, go to lectures, cry, miss tutorials, eat lunch, skip breakfast and so on – and these are all overt behaviors that can be easily noticed, by other people. - external behavior is action carried out by clients and which is able to be seen by others or recorded in some way such as on a video or DVD

8  Some behavior is symbolic of things going on inside the client’s mind and needs to be carefully understood and not interpreted  It is usually best to positively frame responses about behavior but sometimes dysfunctional behavior needs to be honestly identified

9  Effective paraphrasing helps clients identify the differences between feeling, situations and behaviors – and this enables them to take greater control of their thoughts and behaviors  These patterns refer to relationships between thinking, feeling and acting and the need to be quite purposeful in identifying these  Clients with a thinking/feeling pattern often need help in identifying behaviors/goals, in determining action approaches and following through on these  Clients with a thinking/acting pattern may need help in noticing and naming their feelings and being more aware of the emotional impact of own actions on others

10  Blind spots may be dysfunctions about which the client is unaware, deceives self about, chooses not to look at, or just does not care about  Helping clients with blind spots may mean challenging them about self-limiting behaviors  This may also mean confronting them gently about unused strengths and resources  Challenging clients to see their strengths is a key feature of a strengths approach

11  refer to the extent to which clients believe they are in charge of their achievements in life and in turn feel in control of attaining further outcomes.  those who see themselves as internally controlled are more likely to do well in school, successfully stop smoking, wear seat belts, practice birth control, deal with marital problems directly, make lots of money, and delay instant gratification in order to achieve long-term goals

12  Goal setting or planning is a normal human function  Goal achievement increases personal control and the likelihood of further goal success  In interviewing, a successful solution-focused process is based on effective goals  Effective goals belong to the client, emerge from their experiences and may be assisted by brainstorming  Clients are energized by goal-focused work and a belief in their own power to change  Effective goals are based on a view of small ‘baby’ steps, not on final solutions  Effective goals are behavioral, concrete, measurable, realistic and challenging

13  ‘Suppose a miracle happened, and you woke up tomorrow morning and the problem that brought you here is solved. What would be different about your behavior in your everyday life?’

15  Develop the plan by formulating the goal area for focus  Select a sub-goal for initial focus  Name and sequence the baby steps: ‘What do I do first? What do I do second?  Break these right down in term of daily tasks and design an overview plan or stairway  Agree on realistic timelines for each step on the stairway  Identify resources/reinforcements to support/reward each step in the sequence  Summarize the ‘contract’ – the steps, the timeline, resources and rewards

16  I will break you into pairs.  Call each other or use AOL instant messenger to take turns being the client.  Use the miracle question to help identify your goals and vice versa.  What kind of baby steps could you set?
