Parts of Speech (Part 2) Do Now #6: Circle the verbs, underline the adjectives, and put a box around the nouns in the following sentence: Maria and Destiny followed Brandon and David home from school on Friday. Today’s Objective: Given a PPT presentation, students will apply their knowledge of parts of speech by taking notes, looking at examples, and working collaboratively with 90% accuracy. Today’s Standards: WOC 1.3 Grammar: Identify all parts of speech and types and structure of sentences.

Parts of Speech (Con’t) A pronoun is a word that takes place of a noun Example: he, she, it, they, I, we, our An adverb describes verbs and adjectives Example: She ran home quickly. A interjection is something said with exclamation or a lot of emotion Example: “ouch!”, “horray!”

Parts of Speech A preposition shows the relationship to a noun Examples: pretty, blue, yellow, small A interjection shows action or a state of being Examples: in, above, with, around, on, from A conjunction joins words, phrases, and clauses together Examples: and, or, but, because, so

Reader’s Workshop: Parts of Speech As you are reading today, identify a pronoun, adverb, conjunction, and preposition and write it down in your notebook. Be prepared to share your eight words (two of each of the four parts of speech) We will now be reading independently. Remember, reading is thinking, so we must remain silent during this time.

Quiz Take out a piece of paper and write your name (first and last), date, and period in the right corner Copy down the following sentences: 1. Jackie wanted her brother to come see her concert. 2. Matthew and Jamie went to the store to get their outfits for the dance. 3. Each person in the class needs to clean out (their, his or her) desk. Either highlight the pronoun in green and the antecedent in yellow OR underline the pronoun once and the antecedent twice.
