In the beginning, there were Cells… Bacteria are thought to be the earliest forms of life on the planet. Simple life flourished in tidal pools near the sea. Water was warm and full of nutrients.

Bacteria evolved into different cell types Some bacteria evolved into protists. There are three types of protists which later evolved into more complex organisms. – Protozoa  animal-like – Algae  plant-like – Slime molds  fungi-like Protozoa consume other organisms for energy like animals do Algae make sugar through photosynthesis like plants do Slime molds reproduce using spores like fungi do

EUKARYOTIC PROKARYOTIC ANIMAL PLANT BACTERIA, ARCHAEA

Energy Structures in cells Mitochondria Membrane-bound organelle found in all eukaryotic cells “Powerhouse” of the cell Converts sugars into useable energy for the cell Chloroplasts Chloroplasts are the food producers of the cell. They are only found in plant cells and some protists. CELLULAR RESPIRATIONPHOTOSYNTHESIS

CELL WALL Found in plants, algae, fungi, and most prokaryotes Porous to micromolecules and dissolved materials - water - oxygen - carbon dioxide Achaea: cell wall = proteins Bacteria: cell wall = proteins and polysaccharides Plants: cell wall = polysaccharides
