2 Benefits of leading an healthy active lifestyle Brads mum is concerned about her sons health. Brad is 15, over weight and in Year 10 at high school. Brad is having difficultly with his GCSE’s which is making him anxious and stressed. Brad finds participating in games and PE difficult because he struggled to fit in at a young age for the local football club. Brads mum takes him to the GP because she wants Brad to be happy. The GP gives Brad a full medical assessment and recommends to Brad and his mum that Brad needs to participate in physical activity three-four times a week.

3 WHY ? To answer the following question you can lay your workout in bullet points, mind map, or as a structured paragraphed answer. 1.You are the GP that Brads mum as taken Brad to see. I would like you to explain to Brad and his mum why you think he needs to lead a healthy active lifestyle. Explain the benefits that can be had, remember health is more than just physical.

4 Answer Through physical activity he will lose weight which will help improve self esteem and self confidence. Loss of weight will reduce his chance of later coronary heart disease and diabetes. His heart health will improve, his blood pressure will be reduced and his cholesterol will be lower. Through physical activity his cardiovascular fitness muscular endurance and strength will increase.

5 Answer continued When exercising he will be able to focus on the activity and not school work helping him feel less stressed. Serotonin will be released during exercise which is an hormone which will help him feel good. Physical activity will also provide him a mental and physical challenge.

6 Answer By going to the gym or a local athletics club to participate in physical activity he will meet like minded people and develop friendships with new people. He may join a club where his school friends are also members so he will be able to communicate with them outside of school. Performing and training together may require teamwork and co-operation.
