What is a smart bus?? It is a visionary idea for enhancing city, intercity and tourist buses Not only a transport medium, but what the passenger wishes: –A way to keep working –An information medium –Allowing continued monitoring of patients –An entertainment place –Monitoring the outside environment –And so on... SERVICES GENERIC for passengers: Tourist information on the road Meteo info and air pollution Advertisement news CUSTOMISED for passengers: Get the info requested on boarding Keep connection: medical monitoring, Internet access MANAGEMENT: Driver medical monitoring Bus status monitoring Environment monitoring (security, pollution, traffic) CNR-ISTI Pisa (IT) 4

Characteristics Novel idea, existing projects mostly orientated towards fleet management Most advantageous for long trips, such as intercity or tourism Can reduce the usage of cars Can reduce driver's stress Can compete with train services Each bus is connected through a hub, either WiMAX or satellite CNR-ISTI Pisa (IT) 5
