ONE THING I LEARNED AT THE CONFERENCE Melody Baldwin Division of Environmental Services

PLENARY MONDAY Southwest Florida Water Management District Three different projects using the ESRI Analytical tools Classification of vegetation using imagery Segmentation and Classification http://video.esri.com/watch/4650/southwest-florida-water- management-district http://video.esri.com/watch/4650/southwest-florida-water- management-district Minute 9:20 through 9:41

Segmentation and Classification Reference Material Understanding Segmentation and Classification https://desktop.arcgis.com/en/desktop/latest/tools/spatial-analyst- toolbox/understanding-segmentation-and- classification.htm#GUID-9DC0D87F-0814-4AD6-B6BE- E68CC23E412B https://desktop.arcgis.com/en/desktop/latest/tools/spatial-analyst- toolbox/understanding-segmentation-and- classification.htm#GUID-9DC0D87F-0814-4AD6-B6BE- E68CC23E412B Compute Segment Attributes https://desktop.arcgis.com/en/desktop/latest/tools/spatial-analyst- toolbox/compute-segment-attributes.htm https://desktop.arcgis.com/en/desktop/latest/tools/spatial-analyst- toolbox/compute-segment-attributes.htm What is image Classification? https://desktop.arcgis.com/en/desktop/latest/guide- books/extensions/spatial-analyst/image-classification/what-is- image-classification-.htmdesktop.arcgis.com/en/desktop/latest/guide- books/extensions/spatial-analyst/image-classification/what-is- image-classification-.htm

Segmentation and Classification Defined as tools that will Extract features from imagery Create image segmentation Where pixels share the same spectral characteristics The objects are grouped into classes Image classification can be preformed on pixel imagery

Segmentation and Classification Extraction process covers three main functional areas Image segmentation – pixels are grouped Analytical information – segments grouped into objects Classification – represented by a set of attributes

Segmentation and Classification Contacted Southwest Florida Water Sent the how to sheet and I have stored it: \\nasdes\Shared\GIS_Enterprise\How_To_Folder\Segm entation_and_Classification \\nasdes\Shared\GIS_Enterprise\How_To_Folder\Segm entation_and_Classification

Segmentation and Classification PDF from Southwest Florida Water Management DRAFT/Provisional Segmentation Classification Work Flow Requires 10.3 Spatial Analyst License and Segment Tool option only in 10.3.1 TIP: More training better results TIP: for large areas, such as satellite imagery parcel into vertical strips, clip to 1 km areas. Step 1: A. Bring in the image, TIP: “what you see is what you get” so, how the image is displayed on screen is what the tool has to work with so, B. Go To Image Analysis under Windows Tab, you can

Segmentation and Classification Identify vegetation that you are tracking Use aerial and tools to delineate the area End result is the acreage of the vegetation you are studying on a specific date You can then use the time slider and see if the vegetation is growing or decreasing

Segmentation and Classification Question please contact Melody Baldwin 916.376.9806 Melody.baldwin@water.ca.gov
