KNOW THE LOCATIONS…THE FEDERAL CAPITAL TERITTORY, NIGERIA The territory is currently made up of six local councils, comprising the City of Abuja and five Local Government Areas, namely: Abaji Abuja Municipal Gwagwalada Kuje Bwari Kwali (wikipedia)

KNOW THE LOCATIONS…A BIT ABOUT KUJE LGA Kuje is a Local Government Area of the Federal Capital Territory and houses the LGA headquarters. It is about 40 km southwest of Abuja, the Capital of Nigeria. It has an area of 1,644 km² and a population of 97,367 at the ct 2006 census (wikipedia)

KNOW THE LOCATIONS…A BIT ABOUT KWALI LGA Kwali is a Local Government Area of the Federal Capital Territory (Nigeria). Its headquarters are in the town of Kwali. It has an area of 1,206 km² and a population of 85,837 at the 2006 census.

THE INITIATIVE? The initiative is to connect and engage the government with the community and other stakeholders so as to have the government and its partners heavily subsidize the cost of accessing healthcare for the 183,204 people in both communities via a structured COMMUNITY BASED HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAMME

WHY COMMUNITY BASED HEALTH INSURANCE? Community based health Insurance does the following Assist communities, particularly those in the informal sectors, organize themselves to contribute small but reasonable of money to form a pool to assist those who need medical care in any given period Assist communities in accessing orthodox modern healthcare delivery as best as possible using and improving existing healthcare delivery infrastructure or putting in place the basics where there is none Provides a system that Government, NGOs or Donors can work with in order to assist the communities

WHAT’S TO DO? The Local area councils are to Provide a percentage of their budget and allocation as premium for medical insurance for the people in the community. Provide standardization of the Primary health centers in the area

THE HMO…… Mobilizes and sensitizes the people as to the benefit of the community based health insurance programme. Coordinates town hall meetings involving all stake holders and sets up board of trustees with representatives of the community on board with the other stake holders Ensure transparency and accountability of all processes by seeking input and contributions from all stakeholders

THE PEOPLE…. Contribute ideas and suggestions as much as they can to how the scheme should work for them….following their understanding of the benefits. Participate by appointing their representatives to be part of the board of trustees Pay a token amount as part of the premium for the community based health insurance programme. Participate in the enrollment and registration process Give any feedback on to other stakeholders

With community health insurance in place, the people of KUJE and KWALI local area councils would have significantly improved financial access to healthcare. Their well being would improve and there shall be social and economic development. This can only happen when the citizens engage and partner with the government and other stakeholders to design, build and operate a system that works for them……a COMMUNITY BASED HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAMME
