Shape An area enclosed by line.

Geometric Shape The shapes that we know and that have names. Geometric shapes such as circles, triangles or squares have perfect, uniform measurements and don't often appear in nature.

Organic Shape Shapes that are made up and have no specific design. Mostly found in nature.

Positive and Negative Space Artist's Toolkit Positive spaces are those occupied by the main subjects of the work. The Negative spaces are the areas around and behind the positive spaces. Negative space can also be referred to as the background.

NOTAN is a Japanese word which means "dark-light". NOTAN as it relates to design is defined as the interaction between a positive and a negative space.

First Step Sketch several interesting organic and geometric shapes

Second Step Sketch 2 square design with interesting shapes. One with only geometric shapes and one with organic shapes.

Third Step Sketch designs lightly in pencil on the 2 sheets of square paper.

Fourth Step Carefully cut out the shapes. Keep EVERY piece! Arrange all of the pieces on the larger paper. DO NOT GLUE until the design in final.
