Status for the NSDI in Tanzania Dar es Salaam 21-10-2014

It started in 2002 The 2002 Population and housing census (by National Bureu of Statistics) «It was recognised that there was now a considerable collective pool of nationally important and geographically important information in Tanzania» (Johanson 2006) It was not unheard of to have geographic information without coordination stored at different locations. A national steering commity was formed!

The stering Committee tasks To set NSDI firmly on the political agenda so that necessary funding be provided for the smooth development of NSDI Pursue individual NSDI activities as opportunity arise

Coarse timeline 2003 and 2004 The steering commite held initial meetings and a workshop Then it stopped up due to several reasons Funding Unclear ownership Unclear responsibilities 2007 A policy proposal in place 2009 Tanzania Statistical Master plans 2009–2014 The NBS was given the task to be the lead agency in the establishment and operations of an NSDI, and has had the establishment initiative in its Tanzania Statistical Master plans 2009–2014
