Frame Relay Troubleshooting Steps
Verify layer 1 Connectivity Verify layer 2 Connectivity Verify LMI status Verify PVC status Verify Layer 3 Connectivity Ping Remote Hosts
3
Layer 1 & 2 *Cisco Systems -
4
Step 1 – Layer 1 Verify Layer 1 Connectivity by utilizing the show interface command Highlight A indicates layer 1 active Highlight C also display T1 hardware control signal status If interface is down/down, layer 1 problem If interface is up/down, layer 2 problem (Highlight D)
5
Layer 2 - LMI *Cisco Systems -
6
Step 2 – Layer 2 Verify Layer 2 Connectivity by utilizing the show interface command or show frame-relay lmi command Both show LMI status message count. Highlight B & C need to be incrementing If LMI status messages not exchanging, verify LMI encapsulation type with carrier
7
PVC Status / DLCI
8
Step 2 – Layer 2 (cont’d) Verify Layer 2 Connectivity (PVC) by utilizing the show frame-relay pvc command Highlight B show PVC status If PVC status is not active (inactive or deleted), verify DLCI number with carrier. Also ensure that carrier has indeed “turned-up” PVC. The show command also provides details on packet counters and PVC “flapping” Also verify frame-relay encapsulation type (Slide 3 – Highlight B)
9
Step 3 – Layer 3 Verify Layer 3 Connectivity by ping across link.
If successful, take a break you earned it.. If unsuccessful, verify IP address assignments IP routing Verify inverse ARP or manual mappings
10
Questions: If the output of “show interface serial 0/1 displays that the interface is down/down what should be your first course of action? If the output of “show interface serial 0/1 displays that the interface is up/down describe what show commands you could utilize to determine the issue.
11
Questions (cont’d): What are the possible Frame Relay interface encapsulation types on a Cisco router? What are the possible Frame Relay LMI encapsulation types on a Cisco router?
12
Questions (cont’d): Are DLCIs locally significant or globally significant? What does NBMA stand for and how is it different than normal Ethernet?
13
Questions (cont’d): What side of the connection is the DTE?
What is the difference between an SVC and a PVC?
14
Questions (cont’d): What are the primary ITU and ANSI standards / specifications related to Frame Relay? What is the show command to display the information learned by Inverse ARP on a Cisco router?
15
Questions: If the output of “show interface serial 0/1 displays that the interface is down/down what should be your first course of action? Troubleshoot layer 1 / Contact Telco If the output of “show interface serial 0/1 displays that the interface is up/down describe what show commands you could utilize to determine the issue. show frame-relay pvc, show frame-relay lmi
16
Questions (cont’d): What are the possible Frame Relay interface encapsulation types on a Cisco router? Cisco, ietf What are the possible Frame Relay LMI encapsulation types on a Cisco router? Cisco, ansi, q933a
17
Questions (cont’d): Are DLCIs locally significant or globally significant? Locally What does NBMA stand for and how is it different than normal Ethernet? Non-broadcast multi-access. Does not support the use of broadcast frames/PDUs.
18
Questions (cont’d): What side of the connection is the DTE?
CPE / customer side What is the difference between an SVC and a PVC? Switched (i.e. on the fly) versus permanent (i.e. manual configuration by TELCO)
19
Questions (cont’d): What are the primary ITU and ANSI standards / specifications related to Frame Relay? Q.922, Q.933 (ITU) & T1.617 T1.618 (ANSI) What is the show command to display the information learned by Inverse ARP on a Cisco router? Show frame-relay map
