Module 4 Unit 17 – Springs and Fasteners in Industrial Prints
2
Learning Objectives Define terms related to springs in industrial applications. Define terms related to fasteners used in industrial applications. Identify types of threaded fasteners (cap screws, machines screws, etc.) shown on industrial prints. Identify types of nonthreaded fasteners (pins, keys, rivets, etc.) shown on industrial prints. Read specifications related to springs and fasteners specified on a print.
3
Springs and Fasteners Includes: –Springs –Pins –Bolts and screws –Washers –Nuts –Keys –Rivets –Retaining rings

Threaded Fastener Terminology Bolts typically have a head on one end and are threaded on the other end to receive a nut –Cap screw is a bolt that screws into a threaded hole –Machine screw is a small cap screw Terminology is not totally standardized across industry

What is the free length of a spring? The overall distance from one end of the spring to the other end with no force applied to the spring
21
What is the difference between a bolt and a stud? A stud is threaded on both ends, while a bolt is threaded on one end and has a head on the opposite end.
22
List at least three types of threaded fasteners. Cap screws, machine screws, bolts, studs, set screws, and nuts
23
List at least three types of nonthreaded fasteners. Pins, keys, rivets, washers, and retaining rings
24
For a compression or extension spring, how may the load length be specified on a drawing? The specification may be “length at load 1 = xxx”, “length at load 2 = xxx”, etc.
