Situation… H1N1 is a highly contagious viral disease that can spread from the coughing and sneezing of an infected individual or acquiring the virus from a contaminated surface Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, fatigue, coughing, sneezing, sore throat, and runny nose Children may also show signs of the infection through ear infections, nausea and vomiting

Action Steps August, 2009 Reviewed communicable disease policy with administrative staff Presented criteria for dismissing a student with flu-like” symptoms from school to both administrative and nursing staff Reviewed and revised facility cleaning/disinfecting procedures with custodial staff

Action Steps September, 2009 Distributed H1N1 information to families via school mailing H1N1 information available on RCPS website Began to monitor student dismissals for “flu-like” symptoms Began deliberations with the Dept. of Health for in- school influenza vaccine program (MOA)

Action Steps October, 2009 Received notification that H1N1 vaccine will be available mid-October Met with the City of Harrisonburg/Rockingham County Emergency Management Task Force to review and revise the local “non-medical” pandemic influenza plan Approved MOA with the Health Department

Current Procedures Dismissal Criteria 100° temperature (or greater) Cough, sore throat, aches, and/or fatigue Families are encouraged to take their child home and seek medical advice Re-admission 24 hours after fever has subsided (without medication)

In general… Educate and encourage students and staff to practice good hygiene Remain vigilant (for symptoms in students/staff) Continue with the cleaning of classroom areas using disinfectant and the decontamination of areas exposed to the virus Maintain regular communication with local public health dept. Remain within HIPAA guidelines

Relative to employees….. Staff have been reminded to: Tend to their own health habits Stay home when they are experiencing flu-like symptoms Remain vigilant in watching for flu-like symptoms All staff has been made aware of flu-like symptoms
