3 Limited Government  Laissez Faire – let alone hands off  Cut federal budget  Decreased size of departments  Reduced size of army and navy  Repealed Whiskey Tax  Pardoned those in jail for the Sedition Acts

4 Strong Supreme Court  Chief Justice John Marshall  Appointed by Adams  Strengthened the Supreme Court with ruling on Marbury v. Madison

5 Marbury v. Madison  1803  Set the precedent of judicial review  Judicial review – gives Supreme Court the ability to declare laws unconstitutional

6 Louisiana Purchase  Toussaint L’Ouverture leads a revolt in French ruled Haiti.  Napoleon is strapped for cash  Offers Jefferson a sweet deal on a lot of land

8 The Deal  Jefferson only wanted New Orleans.  Ended up buying all of Louisiana for $15 million  Doubled the U.S.A.  Set precedent for future presidents to make treaties

9 Jefferson a hypocrite?  With the Louisiana Purchase, Jefferson increased the power of the federal government.  This goes against the Republican platform.  Why do you think he did it?

23 The Result?  Treaty of Ghent gives victory to Americans  America is now free of ties with England  It’s now time to expand and progress as a nation  Americans now have an identity of their own
