Characters for The Red Badge of Courage Prepared by Eileen T. Hildenbrand

Characters “The youth” is Henry Fleming; he loves blackberry jam. He initially runs away in a battle, but later redeems himself. “The loud soldier” is Wilson who gives Henry a packet to send to his family is he dies in battle. “The tall soldier” is Jim Conklin who dies in the novella. He keeps his rendezvous with death. “The friend of the tattered soldier” is Tom Jamison

Characters Hasbrock is the lieutenant. Thompson is a fellow soldier who overhears the colonel’s praise for Henry. “The fat soldier” tries to steal a horse. Jimmie Rogers gets shot. Mac Chesnay is the colonel. The man with the cheery voice helps Henry find his regiment.

Characters “The tattered soldier” asks Henry where he was hit; Henry abandons him because he is embarrassed because Henry has no war wound. Only four women appear in the book. What is a simile? Chancellorsville?

Potpourri There were four prisoners taken by the youth’s regiment. For Henry, the war is a “red monster.” The general calls the members of the youth’s regiment mule drivers. (Is this a compliment?) The youth becomes the color bearer after the color-sergeant is killed. What does the word “skedaddle” mean?

Potpourri “Through the days of “blood and wrath” the youth becomes a man (He no longer runs away!). Stephen Crane is the author: Where was he born and when? What did his father do for a living? When did he die? How old was he? Where is he buried? How old was he when the novella was published?
