SSocial reform is the attempt to improve society through change.

SOCIAL REFORM Temperance Education Reform for Disabled Abolitionism Women’s Rights

The temperance movement was the desire to get rid of alcohol (“Demon Rum”) Many people thought that alcohol was the cause of many other problems like poverty, broken families, and crime.

The movement to provide free public education for all.

The movement to change the treatment of those with disabilities— especially mental disabilities.

The movement to abolish, or ban, slavery.

The movement trying to get the same rights for women that men had, especially the right to vote.

Many reformers were active in more than one cause. For example: Frederick Douglass (abolitionism and women’s rights) Susan B. Anthony (Temperance and women’s rights)
