2 The Day of Atonement Leviticus 16 Two goats were chosen (16:5-8) One was offered as a sacrifice, and the other was used as a scapegoat (16:8-10) –The first goat was sacrificed (16:15-16) –The second goat was sent into the wilderness bearing the sins of the people (16:20-22) The people were to afflict their souls (23:27-29)

3 Where did the sins go? The blood of goats could not remove them. (Hebrews 10:4) The scapegoat could not carry them. The Day of Atonement was SYMBOLIC! (Hebrews 9:7-9) The sins went on Jesus! (Heb. 9:15; Rom. 3:25)

4 Your Day of Atonement Jesus’ sacrifice provides atonement. (Isaiah 53:5-6; 1 Peter 2:24-25) To receive atonement we must… –Contact the blood of Christ in baptism (Romans 6:3-7; Hebrews 7:27) –Continue to receive cleansingby confession of sins, repentance, and prayer. (Acts 8:22; 1 John 1:9; 2:1-2)
